"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. – Matthew 5:5 ESV
The next blessing Jesus tells us about is for the meek. To be meek is to be humble and gentle-spirited. It’s the attitude that comes along with recognizing our spiritual poverty and mourning our broken relationship with God, due to our sin. Meekness says, “I’m done living for myself, Lord. I’m submitting myself to You.”
Our world will try to tell us that meekness and submission are bad things, but Scripture tells us the opposite. Meekly submitting to the Lord is beautiful and is commended by God.
Jesus, as is so often the case, gives us a wonderful example of meekness. Paul tells us of His gentleness in 2 Corinthians 10:1 and Jesus describes Himself as gentle and humble in heart (Matthew 11:29). We see his humility in how He gave up his place in heaven to become a man and die for our sins.
[Jesus] emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. - Philippians 2:7-8 ESV
If Jesus willingly humbled Himself before the Father, certainly I should also, if I am truly His follower.
And, when I meekly submit to the Lord, I will inherit the earth. What a wonderful promise to look forward to! In Jesus, I’ll one day have the whole earth. What more do I need?
Think About:
How have you seen Jesus’ meekness?
How does the promised inheritance for the meek encourage you?
