Be Devoted To Prayer

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should. - Colossians 4:2-4 NLT

Paul was a man of prayer who understood its vital role in the believer’s life. At the end of May, we looked at his prayer for believers in Colossians 1:9-11a, which is foundational to this ministry. Here, Paul encourages us to devote ourselves to prayer, to be solemnly committed to it. Taking the time to talk to God about what’s on our hearts and to listen to His guidance is a necessary part of my day. When I don’t make time to talk with Him in the morning, it seems like I’m off-kilter all day. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Paul also encourages us to have an alert mind and a thankful heart when we pray. An alert mind helps me to actively listen to what God is saying through His Spirit. Having an alert mind also means that I’m really present and engaged with praying, not just going through the motions. (This is why I usually have my coffee first. 😊) A thankful heart helps me to focus God and all that He has blessed me with, even as I bring requests to Him. That reminds me that He is faithful to provide what I truly need (not necessarily what I think I need) in every situation.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. - Ephesians 6:18 NLT

After Paul urges his readers to be devoted to prayer, he makes some specific requests for himself. I find it encouraging that Paul asked for prayer. Sometimes, we can get the mistaken idea that asking for prayer is a bother to others or that those in leadership shouldn’t need to ask. Here Paul is setting a great example for us. He wasn’t ashamed or hesitant; he simply asked for prayer for the ministry God had given him. His specific requests, that he have opportunities to share the gospel and that he would clearly explain this message, are also great examples for us. As a believer in Jesus, I have been given a precious gift that I’ve been commanded to share (Matthew 28:19). I want opportunities to share this gift of Jesus. I want to clearly explain the gospel when I do have those opportunities. By praying for these things, I’ll be ready when a door opens for me.

Think About:

  • Are you devoted to prayer?

  • When you pray, what do you talk to God about?
