And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. - Matthew 6:13 ESV
We finish our look at Jesus’ teaching on prayer with “deliver us from evil.” The first think I see is the big little word that starts this clause: “but.” “Deliver us from evil” is what God does when He helps us find a way out of temptation.
God delivers us from evil in other ways as well. First, we are delivered from the power of sin in our live through Jesus’ death and resurrection. When I accept what Jesus has done for me and let Him be my Lord and Savior, I am rescued from the death penalty that I owe for my rebellion against God. I am delivered from hell and now have a home in heaven. Thank the Lord for saving me from myself.
I am also delivered from the power of evil in this world. Bad stuff will happen in my life; that’s just a part of living. But God will carry me through tough times, whether it’s due to health, finances, or even attacks by some enemy. Nothing and no one can destroy my home in heaven or my relationship with my Father.
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. - John 17:15 ESV
It’s how I let God care for me in these times that grows my faith and shows it to the world. Am I going to worry about how I’m going to handle something or am I going ask God for help and let Him take care of me? The longer I live with the Lord and the more trials I endure, the easier it becomes to turn things over to God.
The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. - 2 Timothy 4:18 ESV
Think About: What do you need deliverance from today? Are you willing to trust God?
