The steadfast love of the Lord occurs four times in Psalm 103 and a total of 123 times in the psalms (in the ESV translation). So, I think this tells us that this is an important attribute of God to David and the other psalmists.
It’s one of my favorite things about God to ponder as well, as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago. Since it appears so often in this psalm, I thought it was worth a deeper look. Good things bear repeating.
But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to
everlasting on those who fear him.
Psalm 103:17a ESV
Steadfast means firmly fixed in place, immovable, or not subject to change. God’s love does not change, ever. When I fear God, giving Him the reverence and respect that He deserves as my Creator, and I’m in a right relationship with Him through Jesus, I can trust that I will always have His love to comfort and strengthen me. His love never ends, and His love never fails. Nothing I can do will ever change this because this is part of Who God is.
And His unending, never-failing love is immeasurably great.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
Psalm 103:11 ESV
God’s love is great enough to fulfill any need I have for acceptance and comfort. God’s love is great enough to forgive all my sins and to understand all my mistakes. His great love means He shows us compassion as a good, good Father. As we saw last week, His mercy and grace flow out of his great, steadfast love.
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Psalm 103:8 ESV
Finally, it’s by His steadfast love borne out through Jesus that I have been adopted into His family. My Father is the King of kings, and He has given me a crown of love to show that I am His.
