Jesus: Best Gift Ever!

It’s December and time to start getting ready for Christmas. There’s so much to do: decorating, buying and sending gifts, baking, and meal planning, to name just a few. It’s all too easy in the hectic pace of this holiday season, that I don’t always make time to really focus on the reason I’m doing all these things. I’m glad to take some time with you this month, meditating on Jesus, the best gift ever.

Who is Jesus? How can we get to know Him better? One way is to ponder some of His many names and titles in Scripture. Isaiah 9:6 gives us several beautiful names for Jesus:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6 ESV

This verse is one of the first I ever memorized. It’s the text for my favorite chorus from Handel’s Messiah, which is now playing in my head. It’s packed with wonderful promises, speaking to Jesus’ birth and to His future reign. It also gives us several amazing titles for Jesus.

First, He is our Wonderful Counselor. Some translations have a comma between Wonderful and Counselor, making this into two titles.

We often use “wonderful” to mean great, like “it’s wonderful to see you here today.” But this word comes from the same root as “miracle” and could also be translated marvelous. Meditating on who Jesus is should fill us with wonder, awe, and reverence; we should marvel at who His is.

A counselor is someone who gives advice and guidance. Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor, who gives us all the guidance we need to live for Him.

“in whom [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Colossians 2:3 ESV

Think About: How has Jesus been your Wonderful Counselor?
