Jesus: Everlasting Father

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6 ESV.

I don’t usually think of “Everlasting Father” when I think of titles for Jesus. But, odd as it may seem, this verse clearly says that this is a title for the child that was born to us, the Son that was given to us. Jesus is our Everlasting Father.

This is the mystery of the Trinity, one holy God in three persons. I admit that I don’t fully understand how this works, but Jesus told us that, “I and the Father are one." (John 10:30 ESV) Jesus said it so I believe it.

And how wonderful it is to have an Everlasting Father! “Everlasting” brings two thoughts to mind.

First, Jesus has always been and always will be exactly who He is. The writer of Hebrews tells us: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) And James reminds us that there is no variation or shadow of change in God. (James 1:17) This gives my faith in Jesus a firm foundation. He’s the steady, unshifting Rock on which I can confidently stand.

Second, Jesus was at the beginning of everything (Hebrews 1:10) and will be at the end of it all (Revelation 20-22). Moreover, He is always with me. (Matthew 28:20) Jesus is my everlasting, faithful Shepherd Who guides and protects me through this sometimes confusing and scary world. It’s so encouraging to know that I am not in this life alone.

Think About: How does pondering Jesus as our Everlasting Father speak to you?
