And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. - Matthew 6:13 ESV
What are we asking for when we pray “lead us not into temptation?” We’re not saying, “don’t tempt me, Lord.” James makes it clear that will never happen (James 1:13-14). I think this is more along the lines of protecting me from temptation.
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." - Matthew 26:41 ESV
Some of the biggest temptations for me involve my thoughts and attitudes. Our enemy is sneaky and so much of what our culture promotes seems right at first. Take the context of today’s verse for example. What came right before this? Praying for forgiveness for ourselves and for help to forgive others. The world says it’s OK to hold onto hurts and not forgive people who don’t deserve it. When someone has hurt me badly, it can be very tempting to agree with that thinking, even though I know that’s not what God says.
I can let life distract me, so I have to be constantly on guard so that I don’t let ungodly thoughts into my heart.
I’m thankful that God understands my weakness and is always with me to help me in these times of temptation. He will give me the strength to resist, and, if the struggle gets too hard for me, He will give me a way out.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. - 1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
Think About: What are your biggest temptations? How has God helped you with these?
