Son Shine

Updated: Aug 10, 2022

In them [the heavens] he has set a tent for the sun,

which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and,

like a strong man, runs its course with joy.

Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them,

and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Psalm 19:4b-6 ESV

Last week, we looked at the first few verses of Psalm 19, meditating on how the heavens speak of God. David next focuses in on the example of the sun and its daily progress through the sky.

How does this speak of God and His glory? Here are a few ways I thought of:

  • God is the Creator. He put the sun in place and set it on its path.

  • Jesus, the Son of God, is our bridegroom, coming one day to take home those who are his.

  • God is strong and mighty, and He brings joy to those who seek Him.

  • God is faithful and keeps His word, just as the sun keeps to its path.

  • God is everywhere. His light is available to every person on this planet.

  • God is everywhere. He sees everything; nothing is hidden from Him.

The thought that nothing is hidden from God is both amazing assurance and wonderful warning. A wonderful warning because this thought helps me to consider carefully what I choose to do. God knows what I’m thinking and doing; there’s no hiding my sin from Him. Let me honor Him with my choices.

Knowing nothing is hidden from God is amazing assurance when I’m feeling discouraged or lonely. I can take comfort from knowing that God is always with me. He can always find me and show me the way back to Him, back to joy and hope. (See also Psalm 139:7-12.)

Think About:

  • How does the sun speak of God to you?

  • How are you comforted by these verses?

  • How are you challenged by them?
