Memorial Day

I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work and meditate on your mighty deeds. - Psalm 77:11–12 ESV

I’ve been pondering on the importance of memorials lately. Last week, we celebrated Memorial Day, a time to remember all those who have died in service to our country. This remembering makes me so thankful both for the life I enjoy because of that sacrifice and that my family members who served all made it home again.

It’s also important to remember what the Lord has done, as the psalmist says. Pondering all that He has done for me brings me to thankfulness and humility. How great is His love and faithfulness! Remembering this helps me to persevere through struggles, knowing He will be with me as He has been in the past. Remembering also makes me want to tell others about Him so they can know Jesus as I do.

That was the Israelites built a memorial after they crossed the Jordan into the promised land (Joshua 4). While seeing it would help them to recall that event, its primary purpose was to prompt questions so they could teach their children about the Lord.

What memorials to God’s goodness do I have? While there are lots of little things (photos, bookmarks, knickknacks from friends), the biggest reminders I have are notes that I have scribbled in my Bible as different verses have really spoken to me at different times. Sharing my thoughts about different passages with you is one way that I tell others what an awesome God He is.

Think About: What memorials to God’s work do you have? How does meditating on what He has done impact you?
