Mighty God & Everlasting Father

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6

Looking at the next two titles for Jesus today.

Jesus is Mighty God. He is strong and powerful, stronger and more powerful than any enemy I will ever have to face. Revelation 19-20 tell us that Jesus wins the war. Remembering this gives me encouragement to persist in fighting my small battles.

This title also reminds me that He is the one and only God who controls creation. I can lean into His strength when chaos seems to be overtaking me. He will not let things get out of His control.

“The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.” - Psalm 50:1 ESV

Our second title for today is Everlasting Father. If I forget the context, I might think Isaiah is referring to God the Father. But “Everlasting Father” is a name for the Son. This is the mystery of the Trinity. Jesus told us that, “I and the Father are one." (John 10:30 ESV) Jesus said it so I believe it, even if I don’t fully understand how this works. I am always encouraged to think about how God's understanding is so much greater than mine.

And He is our Everlasting Father. He was at the beginning of everything (Hebrews 1:10) and will be at the end (Revelation 20-22). He is faithful and true to His word. This tells me that our faith in Jesus has a firm foundation. When I trust Him, I cannot be shaken.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.  (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)

Think About: How have you seen Jesus as Mighty God and Everlasting Father in your life?
