Seeing God

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” – Matthew 5:8 ESV

There’s a beautiful promise in this verse. The pure in heart, those whole-heartedly following Jesus, will one day see Him face-to-face (1 John 3:2-3). What a glorious sight that will be!

But I see something else here as well. When we commit to following Jesus in everything, our hearts begin to change. We desire what God desires for us. Our worldly desires get rooted out and we become more like Jesus. Our hearts become purely, wholly dedicated to Jesus. And, as we allow the Holy Spirit to purify our hearts, we can more easily see God working in our lives.

One way I see Him in my own life is in the peace and calm God has given me. I used to get stressed out about everything. I’d worry that I wasn’t doing enough or that what I did wasn’t perfect. I’d worry about past events and beat myself up for what I didn’t do that I could have. I’d worry about what might happen tomorrow and if I would be able to deal with whatever came.

But as I learned to know Jesus more, I was able to give up that worry and trust Him. (See Matthew 6:25-34, Philippians 4:6-7, and 1 Peter 5:7). I also am more patient with myself and more compassionate to others than I used to be. That the fruit of the Holy Spirit in me (Galatians 5:22-23).

Think About: How do you see God working in your life today?

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. - Psalm 51:10 ESV
