“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” - Matthew 5:14-16 ESV
This is the second comparison Jesus makes for His disciples: “You are the light of the world.” That’s followed by an exhortation not to hide our light, but to let it shine for all not see. When we do, God is glorified. That’s pretty cool.
So, how are we the light of the world? This light is Jesus. When we follow Him, we have His light with us. When we follow Him, we’ll live in such a way that others can see that light. By His light, they may find their way out of darkness and into lie with Jesus.
Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life." - John 8:12 ESV
The more thought-provoking part of this passage for me is how I let His light in me shine. Is it shining bright and strong? Or have I been hiding it?
I think there are two parts to not hiding my light. The first is to live boldly for Jesus. I want to make choices that glorify Him, even if these choices are counter cultural. I want my words to be truth, even when that’s unpopular. I want to be building others up in love, not tearing them down. All these years of knowing Him and studying His word help me to make good choices.
But if I’m living well for Jesus only around those who are also His followers, I am hiding my light from those who need it most, those who are lost in their sin. This part is harder for me, because I'm naturally reserved and content with my own company. I can happily spend days without going out of my house. So, I must intentionally and regularly get out of my comfort zone and go to places where I might meet someone who doesn’t know Jesus yet. Then they can see and give glory to God.
Think About: Where will you shine Jesus’ light today?
