The Narrow Gate

"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few." - Matthew 7:13-14 ESV

The thought of the narrow gate in these verses is bittersweet to me. Sweet because I have found it and entered through it into the kingdom of God. Bitter because there are people that I care for who take the wide gate and the easy way to destruction.

Jesus is speaking of Himself here. He is the only way to the Father. (John 14:6) I am so grateful that God made a way for us to come into His kingdom. I know that I could never do it on my own. I know that I fall far short of God’s standard of perfect, sinless living. I couldn’t help myself. (Romans 3:23) So, God made a way for me through Jesus’ death and resurrection. When I believed the gospel and trusted God at His word, He led me through that narrow gate.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

Sadly, there are people who reject the way Jesus made for us. They try to get to heaven on their own merits, thinking that all roads lead to heaven. Some imagine that God grades on a curve and, as long as they’re better than most people, they’ll get in. Some will even get angry when told there’s only one way, arguing that a loving God wouldn’t be so exclusive.

One day, they will have to admit that they are mistaken. Everyone will one day acknowledge that Jesus is Lord of all (Philippians 2:9-11).

It’s not easy to follow Jesus wholeheartedly and to stay on the narrow path of living for Him. There are a lot of distractions, things that I’ll focus on instead of Him. And there some people are hateful just because I’m a Jesus-follower. I stumble at times, but He always picks me up. He has helped me navigate many difficult times over the years. Now that I know Jesus and have seen His hand at work, I can’t imagine trying to go through life on my own.

So, what about you, dear reader? Have you found your way through the narrow gate? I pray that you have, that you know the blessings and peace of following Jesus. Think About: Which gate will you enter?
