Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." - Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
Read verse Matthew 11:28 again. Notice to whom we are to come. We are to come to Jesus. Think about this a moment.
Who is Jesus to you?
Here are some of my answers to this important question.
He’s my Savior and Redeemer: I was lost in my sin, helpless to do anything about it, and Jesus saved me. He paid the price for me (Titus 2:11-14, Titus 3:4-7).
He’s my Rock: Jesus is a sure foundation for me, unshakable in all the storms of life (Matthew 7:24-25). In the Psalms, the picture of the Lord as my Rock is often accompanied by words like refuge, fortress, shield, or stronghold. My sure foundation in Jesus gives me protection and a hiding place when I’m in need.
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. - Psalm 62:1-2 ESV
A few more examples can be found in Psalm 18:2, 31:3, and 71:3.
He’s my Shepherd: Jesus Himself tells me that He is my Good Shepherd in the Gospel of John.
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. - John 10:14-15 ESV
Other verses in the New Testament tell me that Jesus is called the great shepherd (Hebrews 13:20), the shepherd and guardian of our souls (1Peter 2:25), and the chief shepherd (1 Peter 5). As my shepherd, He looks after me, guides me, provides for me, and protects me (Psalm 23:1-3, Revelation 7:16-17).
He’s my Creator: Jesus was there with the Father at the creation. In Colossians, Paul tells us that not only was everything created by and through Jesus, He’s also holding it all together right now (Colossians 1:16-17).
And each one of us individually was created with special care.
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. - Psalm 139:13-16 ESV
“Fearfully and wonderfully made” means that God put a lot of thought and care into the creation of each one of us. He thought about me while He was busy making everything else. That gives me goose bumps – a friend of mine calls them “God bumps!” – when I think about the power of Jesus, my creator.
I’ve barely scratched the surface when it comes to pondering who Jesus is to me. Meditating on who Jesus is brings me to worship, drawing nearer to God and praising and thanking Him for who He is and what He’s done for me. And after I’ve had a time of intimate worship, I find that I am refreshed and restored, ready for the next thing.
